Swinging along in the Sun

Mortimer Menpes

1901

Watercolour

Although this depiction of water-way activity comes in Menpes's chapter on "Workers," it is the dynamism of the billowing reddish-brown sails, rather than that of the diminutive skipper, that catches the eye. Still, it is something to be in charge of this impressive vessel! — Jacqueline Banerjee
