After the Festival

A Tranquil Water-way by Mortimer Menpes. 1901. Watercolor. Source: Japan: A Record in Colour, facing p. 56. This may be the Kizugawa, "on the eastern side of the city ..., into which — thanks to the shallowness of the bar — no steamer ever intrudes" (102)." Apparently featureless, this must have appealed to Menpes because of it peacefulness, and also perhaps the variety of the roofs of the building along and beond the waterfront. — Jacqueline Banerjee
