In his chapter on "Workers," Menpes depicts some of the traditional callings of the Japanese — just as he would do on his trip to India in 1903. Craftsmen interested him most, but he noted more generally that "the coolie and the workman in Japan live on next to nothing" (162), yet practised the same courtesies as their social superiors. — Jacqueline Banerjee
