Wood engraving, engraved by the Dalziels. 1½ x 4 inches. One of Thomas Dalziel’s images for ‘Divided,’ in Ingelow’s Poems, p.7. This exquisite design depicts the lovers separated by the river, waving farewell. The pastoral and atmospheric effects invoke a deep sadness, with the falling light suggesting the end of a period in life and the moving water the tides of change. The hatching of the engraved lines is a brilliant rendering and preserves the intimacy of a small-scale drawing.
