Wood engraving, engraved by the Dalziels. 2½ x 4 inches. Another of Thomas Dalziel’s images for ‘Divided,’ in Ingelow’s Poems, p.6. This one is a moody nocturne, with the darkness acting as a symbol of melancholy love and loss. Dalziel interestingly places the ‘lost’ figure in the foreground, and the setting is a prime example of an English landscape that is both an idyll and emotionally-charged.
