Chancel fittings by Ernest Gimson (1863-1919), c. 1906-07, in oak, at St Andrew's, Roker, Sunderland. Prior himself designed the pews in the nave, but the panelling, clergy seats and choir stalls, as well as the altar rails, pulpit and lectern, were all designed by Gimson with "revealed joints that, along with the chamfered details, emphasise the rhythmic structure of the whole" (Carruthers et al. 234). Note that Gimson had also designed an embroidery reredos to be the high point of this otherwise restful scheme, but it was never worked, and the Burne-Jones tapestry was placed there instead (see Carruthers et al. 307).
