The novelist and Egyptologist Amelia Blanford Edwards (1831-92) would have been a little over 40 when she sat for the portrait bust, but Ball gives her face a timeless serenity. He gives her added dignity by showing her wearing a garment that is classical in style, rather than conventionally Victorian.
