St John the Baptist Church, Bristol Street, Brighton

The Rev. Edward Cullin (1776-1850), who was born in Tralee in Ireland, was responsible for the building of St John the Baptist Church. The inscription also tells us that he was the minister of the church for "upwards of thirty years," and that his "frugality and self denial" enabled him to establish a school for the poor there. This memorial stands opposite to Maria Fitzherbert's and is similarly baroque in style: Ian Nairn and Nikolaus Pevsner point to the palm fronds at the sides and the large cherub's head at the bottom (432). There is also some gilding here, of the cross, chalice and tassels above the profile.
