Dr. Protestant tells a group of Ritualist priests, all of whom have the same receding chins and half-closed eyes, “Take your gewgaws to the old lady at the cross keys [which represent the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church] opposite. She likes them, and I won't have them.”
Like “Pernicious Nonsese, ” which appeared 2 weeks earlier, this cartoon depicts a figure who represents the mass of Anglicans — here the protestant tradition, there John Bull himself — rejecting Ritualism.
