Fun (13 April 1867): 56. Signed with a monogram lower left. Courtesy of the Suzy Covey Comic Book Collection in the George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida. Click on image to enlarge it.. William S. Brunton (fl. 1859-71), artist. Engraved by the Dalziels.
This cartoon’s accompanying text, which takes the form of dialogue imitating that of an Elizabeth play, has Viator (traveler) encountering his guide, Scrutator (searcher, inquirer, or possibly critic). The following is typical: “I am no sailor, Scrutator, and the sight of that sea as Hayes hath painted it hath made me as qualmish as if I were aboard a Margate boat. The fellow paints pestilently well!”
