This chunky little fellow is very like the one in an early picture (see link below), looking at the artist with the same bafflement (147). The idea of the child as a "flower of this land of flowers" (147) is driven home by the way he stands next to the blossoming tree, his own tunic echoing the milky pink of the blossoms.— Jacqueline Banerjee
