There will always be a few people at the gate of the shrine or temple, because they need to rinse their hands (and, to be correct, their mouths too), and, if they go into one of the halls, of course they must close their parasols, and remove their shoes. It is hard to explain how different it feels when you step into the shaded interior. — Jacqueline Banerjee
