Slaughden, on the River Aide by Frederick George Cotman, RI 1850-1920. Oil on board; signed and dated 1899; titled verso. 6 1/4 x 13 inches. According to Rupert Maas, "This is painted looking inland from Slaughden Quay over the River Aide in Suffolk, with the North Sea behind. Aldeburgh can be seen beyond the marshes on the right. Cotman was born only 25 miles from Slaughden, in Ipswich. He was preoccupied almost exclusively with the light and atmosphere of East Anglia, particularly the coast" (54).
