"In Mrs Stanhope Forbes' work there are, most certainly, not a few qualities which wil age honourably after the fashion that influenced their style has passed away. Domesticity devoid of sentimentality, accomplished draughtsmanship, pleasant colour, and a poetic vision, which selects the commonplaces of life with due relation of their importance, may be attributed to them. Absence of any straining for originality, a certain optimistic expression of the beauty of the common day, and no special anxiety to solve intricate problems of colour or light, may also be lawfully placed to their credit." — E.B.S., pp. 188-91.
