This plein air sketch epitomizes the Etruscan School and was carried out near Pisa. The foreground consists of a barren landscape covered with scrubby vegetation with a river flowing through it, likely the Arno. The Tuscan Appennine Mountain range is seen in the background covered by a dark and dull overcast sky. This sketch was executed either in the early morning or at twilight.
