St Mary and St John the Evangelist by Lavers, Barraud & Westlake (stylistic attribution). Installed in 1869 in the first window of the south wall in the south chapel of St Nicholas Church, Thames Ditton, Surrey
The window is dedicated to the memory of E. and H. Sayer (Eberhard). These would have been the Rev. Edward Lane Sayer and his wife; the former had died in 1868. The inscription on the brass strip below the window is worn, but "1869," the date of installation, is still clear. The Sayers of The Elms, Thames Ditton, were evidently an important local family (a few details are given in the brief biography in the "List of Carthusians"). The eldest daughter had died just a few years earlier, and is commemorated nearby in the east window of the south chapel.
Parts of the stained glass, and the details of the faces, have faded now. But some of the colours, including those in the quatrefoil at the top, are still quite vibrant, and the figures in their setting, as shown on the right here, are still effective.
