Jesus Carrying the Cross; the Crucifixion

William Wailes (1808-1881)

1861

St Matthias

Friars Stile Road, Richmond

This is the central window in the apse, and, according to Robert Eberhard's sources, the earliest. The scenes are crowded and dramatic, with Mary being supported in her distrss in the right-hand panel. The lowest part of the window is obscured by the embellishment of the gilded crown and angles at the top of the reredos.
