. Percy Bacon Brothers, 1910. The infant Jesus holds up three digits, symbolising the Holy Trinity. Mary, despite her crown and rich robes, looks down in humility or perhaps in recognition of the sorrow that is to come. In the outer ring, the cherubim's expressions are similarly solemn. Touches of red, in the tassels of the cushion and also the halos, lift the tone of the composition, and suggest both royalty and suffering as well. Written in Latin is the text, "For God so loved the world" ("Sic Deus Dilexit Mundum") and on either side below are crowned monograms for Mary.
