Jesus is Nailed to the Cross, the eleventh Station of the Cross. Designed by John Standen Adkins, assistant to the architect James Brooks, at St John the Baptist Church, Holland Road, Kensington, London. The plaque below the mosaic reads, "Gift of William Martin Spencer 1891," which again indicates that it was added long before some of the previous ones in the sequence. Like the one immediately before it, which was perhaps the gift of this donor's wife (Mary Elizabeth Spencer), it is a graphic rendering of the scene, this time with pliers in the foreground, as if to bring home the full brutality of the crucifixion.
