Abram instructing Sarah and Abram parting from Lot
Thomas Dalziel
Date uncertain: 1863 –1880
Proof wood engraving cut by the Dalziel Brothers, printed on India paper
The double image: 9¾ x 7¼ inches at widest point
Illustration in Dalziels’ Bible Gallery, Plate 5
A narrative double image which visualizes scenes from Genesis. In the first Dalziel represents Abraham instructing his wife Sarah to pretend to be his sister, rather than his wife, to avoid his being killed by the Egyptians (12: 11–13), while in the second he depicts Abraham agreeing to part from Lot and farm different areas (13: 8–10). Both are effective pieces of storytelling. [Commentary continues below.]
