‘Pray Mr Frog will you give us a song?’ Circa 1916. One of Warne’s postcard reprints of Caldecott’s illustrations, originally engraved in the 1880s using coloured wood blocks by Edmund Evans (no.H2). 3¼ x 5 inches. Taken from The Frog He Would a Wooing Go. Caldecott’s anthropomorphized characters anticipate Beatrix Potter’s personae and must surely have been an influence upon her. The humour, as usual, is droll, and largely contained in details such as the rat’s tail, which trails out of the window.[Click on image to enlarge it.]
