Vellucent binding for Shelley’s Poems, by Herbert Granville Fell, 1901. This is a poor photograph taken from a contemporary magazine. The binding displays Fell’s heroic imagery, this time in a classical idiom. The treatment of the figure looks more Edwardian than Victorian, and anticipates developments in art of the early part of the twentieth century. Produced in a small run, the book is now extremely rare. [Click on image to enlarge it.]
