Maroon cloth with a gilt design

8¾ x 6 inches

An emblematic design which represents the idea of Pilgrim as a soldier of Christ (symbolized by the sword and helmet), while Grace is denoted by the naturalistic attributes of flowers and butterflies. The gilt central panel is bordered by a floral trellis, embossed in blind. Though not illustrated here, the spine is embellished with a shell – a Renaissance sign of pilgrimage. The book was the brainchild of Charles Bennett, which he viewed as a vehicle for his physiognomical portraits; the difficulties of making a re-issue appealing was solved by procuring a Preface from Charles Kingsley and a delicate design by Rogers.
