Binding for “Suppressed Plates”

A. A. Turbayne, designer

1907

Elaborate gilt blocking on brown cloth.

9 x 6 inches

Very much in the manner of C.R. Mackintosh and the Glasgow style, this elaborate gilt design prefigures the development of Art Deco, and forms a strong contrast with Turbayne’s flamboyant bindings of the nineties. Severe in tone, as if it were announcing a book on funerary practice, the cover gives no sense of the contents, which explore the suppression of a variety of Victorian illustrations by a series of prudish hands.
