The "American": The Central Pacific's number 116, the White Eagle. locomotives with a 4-4-0 wheel arrangement known in the UK and the USA as the "American" were built from the 1850s well into the 1880s. Compare this locomotive with its exposed cylinders, piping, compressors, and cowcatcher to the similar Engine 191 of the Denver Leadville & Gunnison Railroad (1880) and the every different British contemporary locomotives.
