Prince Louis of Hesse was the husband of Princess Alice, Queen Victoria's third child and second daughter. They were married on 1 July 1862, at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. On the same day, Prince Louis was granted the style of Royal Highness in the United Kingdom, hence the inscription here. He later became a knight of the Garter. The couple were visiting England in the June and July of 1867 (see Princess Christian's biography of her sister, p. 182). This is one of Durant's many medallion portraits of the royal family.
