Thomas Brock had designed the medal with the head of Edward VII, so when Edward died Brock was asked” by the Academy Council to produce a new design with the head of George V. The medal shows the king in the uniform of Admiral of the Fleet and is Brock's only portrait of George V. It was to be the last in the series. Edward VIII decided that he did not wish his portrait to appear on Academy Medals, so they now bear a portrait of George III.
