The Black Question

Scene: — Jamaica: — “AM I a man and a brother?”
This vicious racist cartoon, which parodies the anti-slavery campaign slogan, “Am I not a man and a brother,” represents a widespread reaction to the atrocities carried out by a small number freed slaves in Jamaica. For many this outrage quickly was replaced by outrage at the brutal over-reaction of Governor Eyre’s forces, which killed hundreds of freed men and woman, some obviously innocent of any crime. — George P. Landow
