The Contents of the Second Series (1836, 1837)

John Macrone's Second Series edition, "Complete in one volume," contains just twenty sketches and ten half-page plates complementing the London sketches published previously in such unillustrated journals as Bell's Life in London, The Carlton Chronicle, The Morning Chronicle, The Evening Chronicle, and The Monthly Magazine. The final series began with "A Dinner at Poplar Walk" (December 1833) and concluded with "The Drunkard's Death" on 17 December 1836 (in other words, four months after Macrone's publishing the "Second Series"). Of the final fifty-six pieces that are counted as Sketches by Boz, fewer than half appear in the "Second Series," and just half of them have Cruikshank copper-plate illustrations:
