This early war memorial pays tribute to the 141 officers and soldiers of the 79th Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders who lost their lives from all causes in the campaigns in Egypt and the Sudan from 1822 to 1887.

The statue stands in a prominent place at the very heart of Inverness's old town by the station and opposite the Victorian Market. It is a fine representation of a Highlander, and the sphinx makes a relevant and rather fashionable touch. The restoration of the monument in 2005 was the very first project undertaken” by the Inverness City Heritage Trust.
