Painting (in Coade stone) by an unknown sculptor above the main entrance on Schomberg House, which is next to the Oxford and Cambridge Club on Pall Mall. According to volume 29 of The Survey of London, Schomberg House, which was built for the Duke of Schomberg in 1698, is a rare survival of a seventeenth-century town mansion. Entrance with plaque and caryatids below.
The presence of Painting, presumably a nineteenth-century addition, is explainedby the fact that the west wing was once the residence of Thomas Gainsborough, who built a studio and showroom in the garden. There is a blue plaque to him. [Click on images to enlarge them.] — Jacqueline Banerjee
