By posing her daughters one one each side of a large window, Hawarden succeeds in using a powerful source of lighting for the photograph and once again using her favorite subject — doubling or twining, for which she most often employed a mirror. We also have here a comparison (or contrast) of the sophisticated clothing of the British upper class woman with a traditional costume, most likely that of the Swiss or Italian peasant girl. — George P.
