Dodgson had something of an on-off relationship with Ellen Terry. His nephew and biographer Stuart Dodgson Collingwood writes, "the great actress and he were excellent friends, and she did him many a kindness in helping on young friends of his who had taken up the stage as a profession" (185). However, he had nothing to do with her while she was living, between her marriages, with Edward William Godwin, only resuming their friendship when she remarried in 1876 (see Wakeling 208-09).
