The Duke of Albany was Queen Victoria's youngest son, Prince Leopold (1853-1884), who became a student at Christ Church in 1872. Dodgson's royal sitter came along to his studio on 2 June 1875, "and Dodgson took two photographs, 'but neither was quite free from moving'" (Wakeling 239). There was an unusual bond between the two young men. Prince Leopold also developed an affection for Alice Liddell, and would later name his own daughter Alice. Dodgson in turn became fond of the little Princess Alice and her brother.
