Holman Hunt looks considerably more prepossessing here than in some other photographs of him, and it is good to see him at his easel. Colin Ford comments on Dodgson's knack of having "heads always sharply in focus," and their owners looking "a lot more comfortable than those of Mrs Cameron's impressive portraits." He describes Dodgson's technical skill as superior, and suggests that he was "particularly skilled in achieving a relaxed relationship with his subjects" (10).
