Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911)

Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-79)

1868

Source: Bower, Plate XXVI, facing p. 302

Hooker was a celebrated botanist, and by now the director of Kew Gardens. He proposed to meet Darwin on the Isle of Wight in August 1868 (see Huxley II: 115), and probably sat for his photograph then. This seems to be a cropped version of the one in Cameron's Complete Photographs, dated 14 August that year (see Cox and Ford 326). He looks both intense and intent: one can just imagine him scrutinising a specimen.
