Glossing it over

Glossing it over

C. B.

Engraving

Fun 28 (11 September 1878): 107.

Country Frame-maker (to Artist): — “Ah, Mrs. Brown, next door to you, has got some good pictures; leastways, they’ve got a very nice gloss on them.”

Like many cartoons, here and in Punch, this one relies upon a misunderstanding of art and artist. Of course, there is plenty of condescension to the rural worker. After all, how likely is it that a framemaker who also sells artist’s supplies (see the palettes hanging at upper left) would be so ignorant of the art he frames?
