In the topmost panel Kyd parodies Sir Edward Poynter's The Dragon of Wantley: in his version the dragon afflicted by “convulsions of laughter” exclaims, “Ha, ha, ha you can’t hit me.” In the next row we have Hodgson’s Jack Ashore and Frith’s English Archers. [continued below[

The third row has Dutch Smack by Hayes, Archbishop of Westminster by G. E. [Elthhams?], and The Earl of Portsmouth by Wells, and Lady Tezle by Val Prinsep. The bottom two: H. Williams’s A Los Toros and Holyoke’s King Lear. Kyd fills the picture spaces with wordplay and comments on the paintings.
