Lord Palmerston served as Prime Minister from 12 June 1859 to 11 October 1865, and Gladstone was Chancellor of the Exchequer during this period, so he is the most likely target here of a cartoon that employs one of the most famous pieces of classical sculpture. The Laocöon, which illustrates an episode from the Iliad, represents the death of a Trojan priest and his sons because he hurled a spear at the Trojan Horse. [Continued below]
