Richmond by John Ruskin (1819-1900). Pencil on paper. Collection: Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N. Y. Gift of the Landow Family 2021. Provenance: Fine Art Society, London. Click on image to enlarge it.
In this view Richmond Castle appears in the background at left on the other side of the river. Unlike Ruskin's early extremely static drawings, this sketch emphasises movement as it carries the viewer's eye from the vegetation in the right foreground around the hill down to the bridge and then up to the castle in the distance.
