Commentary by Gordon Cooke

Richmond and Samuel Palmer had planned to visit Italy since their days in Shoreham. They set out on 4th October 1837 with Julia Richmond and her son Tommy, and Palmer’s new bride Hannah: they had married on 30th September. They travelled by way of Calais, Paris, Lausanne, the Simplon Pass, Lake Maggiore, Milan and Florence, arriving in Rome on 14th November. They spent much of the early part of 1838 in Rome, studying, copying and drawing, also visiting Naples and returning to Florence later in the year.
