Unknown Land. Wood engraving in black ink by Horace Harral after W. H. Millais. 4 7/8 x 3 5/8 inches (12.4 x 9.1 cm).

This engraving is from Margaret Gatty's Parables from Nature, published by Bell and Daldy in 1861, opposite page 17. Millais was obviously an appropriate choice to design a landscape illustration. This print illustrates these lines: "It mattered not to the Sedge Warbler whether it was night or day! She built her nest down among the willows, and reeds, and long thick herbage that bordered the great river's side, and in her sheltered covert she sang songs of mirth and rejoicing both by day and night. 'Where does the great river go to?' asked the little ones, as they peered out of their nest one lovely summer night, and saw the moonbeams dancing on the waters, as they hurried along" (17).
