This picture of a bride having a vision of the ghost of a man who loved her and whom she may have loved in return provides yet another example of Millais's early fascination with pictorial subjects that combine both romantic love and death. Lorenzo and Isabella and Ophelia are the best known of these subjects, but The Last Scene from Romeo and Juliet, The Woodsman's Daughter, and A Huguenot also portray tragic love.
