A Little Jap[anese Child] in Plum-Colour
Mortimer Menpes

It is disconcerting to come across the short form of "Japanese" in the text, but it must have been current then, and Menpes most definitely uses it without any derogatory meaning. He enjoys the sight of the children, especially, and here the little girl is dressed in the plum colour so appropriate to early spring, the time of plum blossom and plum-blossom festivals. — Jacqueline Banerjee
