Wistaria

Wistaria by Mortimer Menpes. 1901. Watercolor. Source: Japan: A Record in Colour, facing p. 114. This seems to be in the grounds of a shrine or temple, and the wisteria blooms are hanging over a trellis among the lanterns. A girl holding a bowl pauses to look curiously at the visitor sketching the scene, and so becomes an appealing part of it herself. — Jacqueline Banerjee
