Menpes noted the Japanese love of flowering cherries, whether of single boughs or panoramic views of the trees in spring, when careful planting produces dazzling shows: "One huge sweep of blossom is thought out in relation to another sweep that is deeper in tone; near by is a curiously-shaped bare patch of earth which is designed to give value to the brighter colour; and so it continues indefinitely" (86). The dappled sunlight on the path, and the little bridge further along it, add to the effect here. — Jacqueline Banerjee
