A Religious Procession

A Religious Procession by Mortimer Menpes. 1901. Watercolor. Source: Japan: A Record in Colour, facing p. 70. Menpes depicts on of the myriad festivals held in Japan. These are Shinto priests leading the festival deity on a float, watched by throngs of people of all ages. This might be a festival put on by the famous and popular Kamigamo Shrine on the banks of the Kamo river in Kyoto, since Menpes mentions the "Shinto temple called 'Kamogamo'" later on (108). — Jacqueline Banerjee
