Over the Bridge by Mortimer Menpes. 1901. Watercolor. Source: Japan: A Record in Colour, facing p. 34. Japanese bridges appealed to Menpes, as to other artists, Japanese and Western alike. On a visit to Osaka, which he sees as the Venice of Japan, he note "light bridges thrown in graceful outline against the purple horizon" (103). Here, it seems to be sunset, the sky still mellow, the red of the sunset reflecting on the water. — Jacqueline Banerjee
