Walter John James was the son of Walter James, 2nd Baron Northbourne, and his wife Edith Lane. He was educated at Harrow School and Magdalen College, Oxford.

His career as an artist began under the tutelage of Giovanni Costa and he remained the prime influence on his art. James later studied etching under Frank Short at the National Art Training School at South Kensington. Walter became Lord Northbourne on the death of his father. — Dennis T. Lanigan
