A well-kept elderly woman reads a newspaper, holding it a little towards the light: what could be more ordinary? But at the same time there is a rush of interest in her, and a recognition of shared humanity. We sympathize with her as, in the later days of her life, she keeps up with the affairs of the world. — Jacqueline Banerjee
